Unicorn's open... SOS

Postby Typhoon » Mon Mar 08, 2010 6:33 pm

I can chip and putt with the broken finger so I go to Unicorn so lets start now with the stories....

I'm on the putting green thats probably 30 yards right and up higher than the 9th green. I see a guy in the huge trap in the front right of the green, apparently digging to China with one of those fall backwards sandshot techniques. After 3 attempts to get out he announces he's scrapping the SW and going back to the gap wedge. lets see.... the courses opened 2 days ago but he's already up for an equipment change. Other thing is with that technique, he couldn't have thrown the ball out of the trap!

Next up another guy in the same trap as the last group. Guys announces..." Hey, fuckin heads up, I have no idea where this is goin'"....
I did....
dribbled out over the lip and into the greenside bunker.

Saved the best for last.... I'm putting, a ball lands 5 feet ffrom me on the fly then bounces off the cartpath, then a truck windshield and cames to rest across the street. The parking lot is big too.... not easy to get it all the way to the street. Knucklehead in a cart with plaid shorts drives up looking for it. He walks around the green, I'm the only one on it. He looks at me and I said " Don't know where it went after it bounced off the windsheild of that truck". He says, oh... sorry. I said " Good thing I didn't move when you yelled fore, it might have hit me". he says " oh, I didn't yell". I said " No shit"... he just looked at me and climbed over the guard rail. Holds up his group 10 minutes looking under cars for his ball until he sees it across the street. carries it back to just off the green and skulls one across the green....

Some ole sheet at unicorn.... another season has begun.

Honestly, you can see that shit on any muni in America. We see the same stuff at the course I play at. Actually sounds like the same people except it would make more sense if they went up your way for summer and not winter.

I guess we're lucky. There's some kind of unspoken understanding that players that bad avoid the courses that average-or-better players play. There are two 'hacker's courses' that get most of that crowd... especially good for beginners. There's one public course that has a designated 'senior's day,' and a 'ladie's day,' so you can avoid those if you're so inclined.

In this case, it's vice versa... the average-or-better players avoid Unicorn.

speaking of average, I read in GD that only 25% of all golfers can break 90. So I guess that makes me "average".. woohoo.

Players who can break 100 usually aren't the problem. It's the +100 players (score and age) that really feck things up. They have no business on anything tougher than a First Tee level course.

The problem in our area is either private (very expensive), expensive public (also far away) or the munis. There is no "entry level course." There are 5 munis in my county and they are packed on the weekends. Hell they are packed during the week and you have very good and very bad players.

Saturday morning there is a group of near 80 year olds that play. One guy uses 2 walking sticks to get from the cart to the ball (cart path only days are a bitch). WHy the feck can't they play during the week and get the senior rates? Sure enough, they are waiting on line this past week to sign up for the Saturday tee time for the year. I am hoping like hell that they are not in front of us. Really annoying people as well.

You dodge more balls on that practice green than the German Bath House girls do during a Bankers Convention. I have hit a couple of balls onto that practice green and have been on that green when someone sends a shots at it without warning. Nothing like a ball landing between you and cup while you practice 6 foot putts to make you want to wrap your putter around someone's neck.

Once I hit one over it. THe ball hit the metal guard rail at the parking lot on the fly and made a huge noise. Scared the crap out of everyone on the green. I yelled Fore though. I think Unicorn is probably the only golf course where they should require you to use a cup.

Sad thing is, the golf is better down here. It is cheaper, play tends to move faster, The worst course public courses I have played here are better conditioned than the highest priced courses up north. But I for some reason, I still miss Unicorn. I guess it is the only course I ever played regularly enough to call home.

Amen! The RTJ Trial courses are tough for good players let alone those who can't break 100. Last year, I played with some guys to round out their foursome at the Hampton Cove RTJ Course. We were right behind 4 assclowns who couldn't hit the ball in the air. None of them. They would hit these ground ball screamers. By the 5th hole and waiting endlessly on these bastards and everyone stacked up behind us, I drove to 6 and no one was on the hole. Drove across 6 and the group on that hole was coming off the green. The guys we were behind weren't even on the green at 5. I called the clubhouse, marshal made them let us play through. We didn't see these guys again until 17 tee and they were just getting to 10!!

Point being a RTJ course is not the place to learn the fecking game. They essentially played 4 holes in the time we played 11. Apparently, they hadn't let anyone else through either because no one was behind us.

Given Typhoon's stories over the years, I doubt anyone at Unicorn would even hear you yell "Fore!"
